To answer the most common question - If a driver has never owned a Digital Tachograph Card, he cannot drive a vehicle fitted with a digital tachograph.
These 'smart cards' are similar in style to the photocard driving licence but can store information about not only
the driver but also his working day.
There are four smart cards:
Control Card
Workshop Card
Driver Card
Company Card
Control Cards
are used by the police and VOSA when they carry out checks to enforce the
legislation. These cards will give unlimited
access to all and any information stored within the digital tachograph.
Workshop cards
used by companies that are registered as calibration centres so that they may repair,
reset or programme the equipment. Any changes to the system are recorded for future reference.
Driver Cards
contain information relevant to the driver such as name, driver’s number and
also details of his routes travelled, time spent on the road and time spent stationary.
Company Cards
are used by the haulage companies themselves so that that they may check the information on the tachograph vehicle unit and make
any amendments to the basic setup.
